NURC Observes ‘World Water Day 2024’- “Water for Peace & Prosperity”
As we commemorate World Water Day 2024- “Water for Peace and Prosperity”, it is important that we acknowledge the significance of water conservation, access to clean water, and the preservation of water resources for future generations.
Water is a fundamental human need, vital for sustainable development and is the lifeblood of our planet. From quenching our thirst to growing our food, from powering industries to sustaining ecosystems, water plays a vital role in every aspect of our lives. It serves as a catalyst for unity, cooperation, and advancement in addition to being a source of nourishment.
The availability of clean and reliable water can improve public health and sanitation within communities. However, disputes over water resources can arise due to pollution, water scarcity, and poor land use management, particularly in regions where water is scarce. Therefore, water conservation, watershed protection and efficient irrigation techniques, can unlock the full potential of water as a driver of world peace and prosperity for all.
Water can be a unifying force for international cooperation, for the effective management of transboundary water resources, such as rivers and lakes that traverse several nations. It is therefore essential to all aspects of economic activity, from industry to tourism, from energy production to agriculture, as it fosters economic growth and creates job opportunities.
Together as a nation, let us pledge on this World Water Day 2024—“Water for Peace and Prosperity”—to use water’s power for the benefit of all people. Let’s value water not just as a resource but also as a representation of our interdependence and a driver of prosperity and peace.
The National Utilities Regulatory Commission (NURC) is responsible for regulating water supply services in Saint Lucia, which includes ensuring that consumers receive fair prices and quality services. Therefore, consumers are allowed to file complaints with the NURC after they have exhausted all the options with the utility company or service providers, using the prescribed form available on the website or at the office in Sans Souci, Castries.
